Q&A with Vickie Simos

A woman with shoulder-length blonde hair smiling while standing next to white bookshelves filled with colorful books. She is wearing a black T-shirt with white text that reads 'The Boxer Within,' a watch on her left wrist, and a bracelet on her right wrist. She is holding a book titled 'Robin Sharma' with her right hand. The setting appears to be a room with a large window overhead and a gray couch in the background.

Why did you start writing your book?

It was suggested by a friend as therapy, for me to pen how Martial Arts (MA) helped me with improving my self-esteem and self-confidence. It was my own personal project, but was then considered for publishing when I pitched the book at the Salisbury Writing Festival. I revcieved the official offer Dec 27th 2014.

How long did it take you to finish the book?

About 7 years. I was working full-time, training and studying at the same time.

Where did you grow up?

Riverland.

How long did you live in the Riverland?

19 years too long.

How old were you when you left for the city?

19 years.

When did you take up Martial Arts and why?

15 years old, because of a boy I liked.

What are your qualifications?

Bachelor of Arts – Major in Psychology/Minor in English & Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy. I am also a PT.

What is the nature of the business?

It's about transformation, confidence, mindset, empowerment, resilience, through keynote, writing, podcast and film. It's for anyone fighting self-doubt, identity struggle, or starting over.

Do you have any other future plans?

Yes, to turn the book into a documentary and eventually a film.

To combat the stigma of mental health issues through writing, film and my podcast by the same name.

I am also the founder of Thelo Active Therapy which uses Martial Arts as a combination or alternative to mainstream therapy. This is delivered in person and also via online counselling through Zoom. I also present at seminars, speaking at events and run workshops.
